Syd is 5 now and loves dolls. We have a few styling heads at home – I like to practise potential hair do’s for Syd on them. When we received the Barbie Dreamtopia Rainbow Styling Head to review, Syd was very excited.
The styling head has an RRP of £19.99 and is suitable for children aged 3 and over. Rather than spending ages explaining everything that’s included, I made this video so you can see for yourself…
As the video shows, the set includes 20 pieces. Those are:
1x Styling head
4x hair elastics
6x hair clips
8x gems for the clips
Barbie’s hair is set with what feels like hairspray. This was hard to brush out, but spraying a bit of water on definitely helped. Once that was done, her hair was lovely and soft, and easy to brush. The pink tint to her hair reminded me of Frenchie from Grease – tell me I’m not alone there!
The gems which are included for use with the clips are really small and a little fiddly. Personally, I’d have preferred better quality hair ties and no gems. Syd is 5 now, so fine with the pieces but I’d be worried about 3 year olds swallowing them or putting them down their ears or up their noses.
That said, the clips are cute and go into Barbie’s hair easily with or without the gems, so you can always pop those to one side until your child is old enough to use them without concern.
The hairbrush is lovely quality. It’s plastic and goes easily through Barbie’s hair. The teeth are short, making it perfect for dolls.
Personally, I think the Styling head is a little on the small side for the price. She is really lightweight too, so you can’t leave her freestanding while you do her hair as she tips over. I find putting the styling head between your legs works better.
All things considered, Syd loves the styling head. She has asked me several times if she can have rainbow hair like Barbie’s. I think it is a little over priced for what it is, but would definitely recommend it if you can find a great deal. £10-£15 is about what I’d pay for it personally.
We received the item for the purpose of this review. All words and opinions are my own.
