Recently, I was sent a sample of Colour B4 Extra to review.

This weekend, I set about using it to remove the colour build up on my hair. I have a lot of Grey, so dye my hair often. My roots are always a different colour to the rest of my hair as the build up makes the ends look much darker. I wanted to remove this so I have an even base to start from again.

This was how I looked before I started

The first thing I noticed when I read the instructions was that I'd need 2 boxes as my hair was classed as "long." I got another box, then completed the allergy test on Friday night. Yesterday, I informed hubby he was on babysitting duty for the afternoon while I tackled my hair. I started the process at 13.35 and my hair was completely done by 16.10, so it took 2.5 hours from start to finish - not a quick process!

I read the instructions carefully, and set to work. I applied the liquid as per the instructions. 1 box was enough to cover all of my hair, but it was definitely not "saturated" (as the instructions said). I used the 2nd pack to go back over my hair and ensure it was all soaked. It took me 40 minutes to apply the lotion.

My hair is thick, so I followed the instructions and wrapped my head and hair in cling film for the developing time (60 minutes), I also ensured the room was warm. I then enjoyed an hour of peace and quiet while the Colour B4 developed.

This is me rocking the cling film look

After an hour had passed, I rinsed the colour b4 in the shower for 10 minutes (I set my phone alarm to ensure I stayed in long enough). 10 minutes felt like a lifetime, and I was a bit concerned as the water was clear, and contained no traces of old colour. I wrongly assumed at this point that the Colour B4 had not worked, but  decided to complete all the steps anyway to give the product a chance to prove me wrong.

The next step was to apply the buffer, leave it for 1 minute and then rinse for at least 5 minutes. I did this, but rinsed for another 10 minutes - just to be thorough.

Next, you have to wait a short while before re-applying the remaining buffer then rinsing straight away. I left a 15 minute pause here, then completed this step. Finally, I dried my hair. I was shocked to see the product had indeed worked, despite there being no visible colour residue in the water during rinsing.

This was how it looked immediately after drying

After I'd dried my hair, it felt a bit dry, so I applied some spray in conditioner and then straightened it. This was the result. I am happy to say the Colour B4 has definitely removed all of the build up. My hair colour also looks pretty even - the only slight difference is at the roots where no dye has ever been applied.

This was how it looked after I'd straightened it

All in all, I am happy with Colour B4 but there are 2 things I feel should be written on the box, not just in the instructions. The instructions advise you to wait 7 days before re-applying another colour. It is possible to re colour your hair right away, but the new colour may appear darker than intended. The other thing is that if your hair is heat damaged, the process may not work. So if you use very hot styling products (over 230 degrees), chances are your hair is too badly damaged for the product to be effective.

I would recommend this product to others who want to remove darker shades from their hair, but I will always point out that it can not undo bleaching. It is true that Colour B4 doesn't smell great - though the smell is not as bad as I was expecting.

I may have to try this, reason being I intended to dye my hair a nice chocolate brown around 3 years ago...... Nice n Easy were wrong to say it would be choc brown as it turned out a lovely pitch black!!!!!!!! Since, because I don't want to get it stripped and have ginger hair, I have dyed it semi perm black ever since ..... I really hope this works as I have spent a long time looking like an ultra feminine GOTH!!!!! Wish me luck, your review has really helped!!! :) xxx

This was so useful to read. I have been using dark brown semi permenant colours on my naturally dark blonde hair for over 5 years now. Do you think it would work on my hair?

Hi ladies,
I am not an expert in colour b4, nor an employee of theirs.
I can't say for sure whether or not it will work on you, but my hair had been dyed loads of different shades over the years, and it worked for me. If you want more advice, give them a nudge on Facebook or twitter - they are active on both :-)

I've just used colourb4 for the first time today. I have grey hair which is actually now my natural colour , I have been colouring my hair dark brown for 15 years so have a lot of build up. I wanted to go lighter and I knew if I used it my hair would go white/orange. I bought a dark ash blonde to put on after. Unfortunately after 15 mins my hair was brown again, not as dark as it was, but still not what I wanted. I was very impressed with colourb4 it took all the brown from my hair , I used 2 bottles as my is hair shoulder length thick hair and I put a plastic bag over my hair whilst it worked , I also used hair dryer to keep hair warm to ensure it worked and it did. All in all it did what it said it would do so very pleased. I will be using it again very soon and ill use a lighter blonde to try keep it lighter.

I had to use 2 boxes of this as i have long thick hair and I ended up with a third of my hair a lot lighter than the bottom 2 thirds, so it didn't get all the build up out evenly. I eventually got it all out by using a third bottle, I applied a light brown dye afterwards, and my hair went black again. I would suggest you get a much lighter colour if you wish to dye your hair again afterwards as your hair is so porous. Apart from my hair being in much better condition, I was back to square one.

@Kirsty the box says for best results, wait 7 days before dying your hair. I waited and my dye took perfectly. Maybe try holding out before putting the dye on next time? :)

@Jane I would definitely wait 7 days before dying it again - and use LOTS of conditioner in between :) hope that helps.

I have bleached hair and thought I'd pop a semi colour on to keep me going til hair appointment. Anyway I put a golden light blonde on (even did strand test) boots 10.03 and suitable in bleached hair..........well it went ginger!!!!!!!!! Panicked but thought it may look better next day?......NO!!!! Worse in daylight so called my friend to buy colour b4 regular as didn't want to be seen!!!!! Was really nervous about using it , tested as advised and thank the dear lord it worked!!!!!!!!!!! Felt dry but used intensive conditioner etc and all ok!!! I'm going to put up with re growth until my salon appointment!!!!!! It really did help !!!!!!

@Carol Yes it will lift black dye off, and while you can dye your hair immediately, the packaging does recommend waiting 7 days to allow your hair to recover before dying. I have done it immediately with no issues.
