Tips For Keeping Comfortable When Dog Walking

Living in the UK means I’m used to many extremes of weather. Quite often it goes from super sunny one minute to pouring down the next. It’ll come as no surprise then that the first of my tips for keeping comfortable when dog walking is to make sure you wear supportive, waterproof footwear.

Waterproof Footwear

During the Winter, I usually always wear thermal socks and waterproof walking boots. These are far too hot in the Summer though. So they are a great alternative to hiking boots if you’re sticking to the main paths.

Hydration Hydration Hydration

Both your dog and yourself will need to keep hydrated while you’re out. Even if it’s not a super hot day, it’s still easy to become dehydrated… Especially if you break a sweat. So pack a drink of water for yourself, as well as some water and a bowl for your furry friend.

Layer Up

One thing is for certain when you’re walking dogs… You’ll be MUCH WARMER when your walk is finished than when it begins. So with that in mind, it’s always a good idea to put a few layers on, during the colder months. Unless you’re lucky enough to have a GAMMA jacket, you’ll more than likely need to take off at least one layer.

Personally, I take one of those small rucksacks that fold small enough to fit in your pocket. Then when I want to take my coat off, I pop it into the bag. If I need to take off another layer, there’s space in the bag for that as well.

Sun Cream

When I was researching these tips for keeping comfortable when dog walking, I was amazed how many similar posts overlooked SPF protection. I’m not just talking about the humans here, either – it’s important to put some SPF on your dog too – especially if they have white fur or pink inner ears, or round their eyes, nose, chops or tummy. They are higher risk of skin cancer, so try to limit their time spent in direct sunlight during the hottest hours of the day.

Plan Your Route

It’s important to plan your route if you’re heading somewhere new. Especially if you’re visiting the coast. It’s easy to get cut off by the tide in the UK, so you need to be certain you’ll make it back before that happens. Make sure you’ve got plenty of charge on your mobile phone just in case, and tell someone where you’re going.

It’s also worth considering carrying a personal alarm. Given the number of dogs being stolen at the moment, anything which can deter a would – be thief is a great idea in my book.

This leads us back to making sure your footwear is suitable for emergencies too. I mentioned LOOM waterproof sneakers earlier on, but just want to mention the fact they are lightweight and flexible. This makes them perfect for running from any would – be thief, or chasing your dog, should they decide a passing squirrel is more interesting than you are. (I’m speaking from experience here).
