Today I’m sharing my family’s 2024 dream vacation. If you’ve followed my blog for a while, you’ll know my son is Classically Autistic and Epileptic, and my daughter has Gluten, Dairy and Soya food intolerances. Throw in my being Veggie, and it makes hotels pretty much impossible for us. That’s why my 2024 dream vacation is a charming Mykonos Villa. Keep reading to find out more.

My Family’s 2024 Dream Vacation

I feel I need to be completely honest here and confess that my children have never been abroad. I had planned to take them in 2020, but lockdown threw a spanner in the works. Then Sam’s Epilepsy diagnosis meant international travel wasn’t an option for a while. Finally, things have settled down enough to consider our first international family trip.

Mykonos is one of the smaller Greek islands, with just 33 square miles of land. You can fly directly to Mykonos from Manchester Airport, without breaking the bank. This means the budget is bigger, so I can even consider a luxury villa in Mykonos, with stunning views, like the one pictured below.   

Why do I Want to go to Mykonos?

There’s a lot of reasons Mykonos made it onto my list. A big reason is that affordable flights are available from my local airport (Manchester). The 4 hour 15 minute flight time isn’t too horrific, either, and the airport is located 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) southeast of the town of Mykonos, so transfers will be a breeze.

My kids like being outside when it’s warm, but neither of them can cope with hot-hot. They’d struggle with Tenerife’s August average temperature of 28 degrees, but I think they’d both cope with Mykonos as its’ average temperature is 25.9 degrees in August.

Beaches

The kids and I are big beach fans. One of the perks of staying on such a small Greek island is that the Aegean Sea is never far away. The southern strips are the most popular beaches, which means they are often more crowded.

Alternatively, the northern sands are often more remote and peaceful. Public transport isn’t the best on Mykonos so you may want to consider car hire if you plan to see more of the island.

Food

I am a huge fan of Greek food. Halloumi and Feta are basically life for me, so going back to Greece is definitely on my to-do list. (Halloumi is from Cyprus of course, but Feta is Greek through and through.

My daughter is gluten free, which isn’t as big of a problem in Mykonos as it would be in Italy, for example. Much greek cuisine is naturally gluten free anyway… Souvlaki (Greek kebabs), greek salads, and even a good percentage of Greek Mezedes are ok.

The big plus of opting for a villa like those listed on kinglike concierge is the ability to cook at home. That way we know for sure what’s gluten free, and what isn’t. My son basically lives on plain omelettes, toast and cornflakes, so eating in definitely suits him better too.

Geeky Stuff

I’m a big fan of local history and also Ancient Greece, so getting to see things like the Mykonos Windmills in person would be brilliant. These windmills are a defining feature of the Mykonian landscape, and while there are plenty dotted around the island, most are concentrated in the main town of Chora.

Many have been refurbished and are now homes to locals. Seeing them is definitely one reason Mykonos is my 2024 dream vacation destination.

Other Reasons to Consider a Family Vacation in Mykonos

Mykonos definitely doesn’t have the cheap and cheerful, party hard reputation often associated with Rhodes or Corfu, and the higher prices mean it doesn’t attract as many young, rowdy holidaymakers.

I’m a big advocate for equality, so knowing that Mykonos is known to be LGBTQ+ friendly is a big plus for me. In my experience, people and places that are accepting of LGBTQ+ community are also accepting of those with additional needs, like my son.

So there you have it – my family’s 2024 dream vacation destination is Mykonos. It’s worth adding that Mykonos may not be the best place for a family holiday if your children are young, as there’s not a great deal of child-focussed entertainment available. You can make your own fun if you opt for a villa with a private pool though.
