3 Reasons Why Should You Choose Fair Trade Cashews

Sharing is Caring!

Today I’m sharing why you should choose Fair Trade Cashews, so read on for my opinion… Cashews are valued all around the globe, even though they are native to the tropical environment. Colonists introduced Cashews to Africa and India from South America, particularly Brazil. Africa are now the largest cashew producers in the world.

While comparing Cashew nuts to almonds, Brazil nuts, and even the well-known peanut, their flexibility puts them in the spotlight. Cashews are available in a variety of forms, including raw, roasted, salted, and unsalted. They now get used in the manufacture of dairy replacements, which is great news for those with food allergies, like myself.

Why Should You Choose Fair Trade Cashews

This little nut is shaped like a kidney and contains a broad range of minerals. You would not expect a nut such as cashew to have so much happening inside of it. Although it’s considered one of the less significant nuts, its caloric content is the highest. They are often a health freak’s favourite because of their great dietary value.

Their creamy, milky flavour is what pulls people in. Thanks to their flexibility, cashew nuts can be used in lots of dishes and eaten as a snack. Cashew nuts regularly get used to adding flavour to sweets and healthy dishes. You should involve this nut in your food intake because of its myriad of benefits. One thing worth considering before you tuck into your Cashew dish is: How did they end up here?

The Journey of the Cashew from Fruit to Nut

It takes a long time to harvest cashews, prepare, and package them. To bring this kidney-bean-shaped nut to the consumer, a lot of work and procedures are necessary. Even though processing comes later, harvesting is arguably the most crucial aspect of the Cashew’s journey.

The first phases in the cashew growth process are the fruit and nut. The cashew nut has an apple connected to it, which either gets disposed of or used as cow food. This fruit develops three to five years after the cashew tree gets planted, whereas maturing takes place 90-100 days after blossoming.

Farmworkers use the fruits that fall to the soil to feed livestock and improve the land. In some countries, the farmers choose to let the fruit fall to the ground. They do this instead of plucking it straight from the branch. When the fruit drops, it is mature, and the nut is then ready for harvesting.

The subsequent step is the careful separation of the nut from the apple fruit. Farmers typically use a razor blade, a very sharp knife, or a nylon string to ensure exactness in the separation. Labourers use drying matting, tarps, or cement floors to air-dry the nuts. To ensure that each nut gets dried uniformly, it takes 3 to 4 days of constantly turning over.

When nuts are properly dried, they create a clicking or a rattling sound. The workers then reject the underdeveloped or the diseased nuts. In the process of ventilation, the ripe cashew nuts typically get stored in jute bags.

So Why Should You Choose Fair Trade Cashews?

Cashews are one of many nuts that are jam-packed with nutrients. But have you ever considered how such a little nut makes its way to its enthusiasts?

Cashews are the main nut available in South America, namely Brazil. In these underdeveloped nations, labourers often face brutal work environments and are usually paid a pittance. When you choose fair trade cashews , you can satisfy your daily cashew needs, while ensuring fair pay and working conditions for those involved in the Cashew production or farming process. These cashews also get licensed as organic, thanks to Fair Trade. This phrase refers to the absence of insecticides, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), or other inorganic substances throughout any stage of the development process.

The Fair Trade approach aids in the eradication of poverty. Not only that, but it also addresses the concerns and necessities of those unable to feed their families. Fair Trade eliminates the intermediary, allowing the producers to keep more of the returns. Local company owners will gain greater authority. As a result, they will have more money to support themselves and their households. Through this step, society will thrive too.

The majority of cashew manufacturing still gets done by hand, which demands a tremendous amount of work. But how much of this falls under the category of fair trade? Approximately 3% of the world’s cashew nuts. That means 97% of people buy nuts which are harvested by the poorest of people, often in unsafe and dangerous conditions. For me, that alone makes me want to choose fair trade cashews, when cooking with them in future.
