Today I’m sharing 3 ways to add space in small bedrooms. It’s no secret that I’m in the middle of a very long full home refurb. In fact, I started work on our fixer – upper way back in 2019. Since then, I’ve made a good deal of progress, but there’s still a lot more to do. The Kids, bedrooms are finished, but I’m now planning my own room. So keep reading for some inspiration.
Ways to add Space in Small Bedrooms
Way back in 2009, the kids’ dad and I did a full house flip on what was to become our marital home. He had a LOT of clothes when we met, and was using two double wardrobes by himself. When we were looking for tips to add space in small bedrooms, I asked our joiner to build us a custom wardrobe, which met his needs. The wardrobe was floor to ceiling height, and had two clothes rails. This meant everything was still hung up, but it took half the space!
Double Clothes Rails
We had two of these double wardrobes built, each with two clothes rails. So we both had twice the hanging space, but only used the same amount of floor space. We had one on each side of the bed, complete with matching over – bed cupboards and a 3rd single wardrobe, which was just shelves. This added vital shoe and bedding storage, and meant there was plenty of room for all of our clothes, shoes and accessories in our room.
We also opted for matching built – in bedside tables too, which had drawers to accommodate underwear and charging ports. This left the room looking much sleeker and less cluttered.
Under Bed Storage
If you aren’t utilising the space under your bed, definitely factor that in. There are several options when it comes to under bed storage now. Long gone are the days of 4 drawer divans being as good as it got. You could opt for an Ottoman style bed, which lifts up. This allows you to easily see everything contained inside the divan style base.
Alternatively, you can opt for more cost effective storage boxes on wheels, if you prefer a more traditional bed style. If you’re looking for ways to add space in small bedrooms for kids, the best option may be a cabin bed. This would allow you to put a wardrobe, desk or toys underneath. By doing this, you’re freeing up pretty much all of the floor space a traditional bed would take up.
Move the Radiator
If the bedroom is really short of space, you may need to reconsider radiator positioning. For example, if the wardrobe would be blocking the radiator, it may be that you need to relocate the radiator, or consider alternative heat sources. Radiator positioning is something many people have conflicting opinions on. My house has them below the windows in all but two rooms. The two rooms which are different are by far the warmest.
Heat rises, so it’s not advisable to consider putting a radiator higher up the wall. You could always consider getting rid of the radiator and installing under floor heating, if your budget allows. More cost effective options include electric wall heaters, or opting for a smaller, double radiator instead of a larger single one. (Double radiators protrude from the wall more, but give off a lot more heat).
Other Things to Consider
