The first place I looked for the answer was on the Volta website. Here’s what they said…
“While most light bulbs are fixed to a socket, VOLTA is powered through magnets and the air by induction, allowing you to illuminate your home and stand out with this awe-inspiring floating lamp.
Suspended in the air with almost no friction, its gentle rotating effect will keep you mesmerized in peaceful state of mind for hours.”

How Does It Levitate?
To answer this question, I’m going to quote from the Volta website again…
“Inside the wooden base there are two things, you will find that there is array of electromagnets and a magnetic induction charger. When lowering the bulb onto the block, the outermost electromagnets serve to attract the bulb’s base while the inner magnets create a repelling force. This is what holds the bulb in place and causes it to hover a few centimeters above the block”.
So long story short… Once the bulb is hovering within range of the base, the receiver inside the bulb is able to pick up power from the charger block via magnetic induction.
The video I shared above shows it takes some practice to get the bulb to levitate, but I think based on the above information, I can now answer the question… Is the Volta levitating light bulb a trick? The answer is of course no! the bulb really is floating!
The question now is, where would you put one? If someone bought me one, I think it would have pride of place in my living room. However, if you’re fortunate enough to have a decent office or home library, it would look fab in there too.
