Today I’m sharing 10 items to include in a care package for a sick loved one. When someone you care about falls ill or has surgery, a thoughtful care package can be a beacon of comfort and support. It lets them know they are cherished and remembered, as well as aiding their recovery.
My sister is about to have a serious operation with a lengthy period of bed-rest to follow, so I have been putting together a care package for her. I figured I’d share the items I’m putting inside here, to help others create one too.
What to Include in a Care Package for a Loved One
Each person will require a different care package, depending on their ailment. This means some items featured may not be suitable for each recipient. Hopefully there’s still plenty of ideas to get you started though.
Here are 10 essentials to include in a care package for a sick loved one. Each has been chosen to provide a blend of comfort, relaxation, and a touch of indulgence.

1. Bath Bombs
Bath bombs transform a regular bath into a luxurious spa experience. They can be particularly soothing for someone feeling under the weather. Choose bath bombs with calming ingredients like eucalyptus or chamomile.
These ingredients not only provide a pleasant aroma but also help to relax muscles and ease tension. Consider including a luxury bath bomb gift set for an extra special touch. Bath bombs are a perfect item to include in a care package.
2.Fluffy Socks
Cold feet can make anyone feel worse when they’re sick. Fluffy socks are perfect for keeping warm and cosy. Opt for socks made of soft, breathable material like cotton, bamboo or fleece. Fun colours or patterns can also add a cheerful touch to your care package. I feel fluffy socks are an essential item to include in a care package for comfort.
3. Eye Mask and Ear Plugs
If the recipient is in hospital, these are a must in my opinion! Together, they will allow the “patient” to filter out the chaos of the hospital ward, and help them rest.
Ear plugs will drown out the annoying beeps, buzzers and shouts from the ward, while an eye mask promotes restful sleep by blocking out light, which can be especially helpful for someone who needs to nap frequently throughout the day, or is on a busy hospital ward.

4. Hot Water Bottle or Warmies
A hot water bottle is a classic comfort item to include in a care package. It can provide warmth and relieve aches and pains. Modern hot water bottles come in various designs, including those with cute, cuddly covers. This makes them not only functional but also a delightful gift to receive.
You should opt for a microwave safe cuddly one like Warmies, if the patient is a child. This removes the risk of them opening it and spilling the hot water on themselves. (To be honest, I’m 41 myself, and I much prefer my armies over my hot water bottle, so perhaps choose one of those for your patient, regardless of their age).
5. Chocolate
A touch of indulgence can brighten anyone’s day. Include a selection of your loved one’s favourite chocolates and sweet treats to boost their mood.
Dark chocolate can be a particularly good choice, as it has health benefits, including being a source of antioxidants. Whether they prefer creamy milk chocolate or rich, dark varieties, sweet treats are sure to lift their spirits. Chocolate is a delightful item to include in a care package.
6. A Book
A good book can be a great companion during recovery. Choose a novel, a collection of short stories, or an inspirational book based on your loved one’s reading preferences. Reading can be a great way for them to escape, even for a little while, from the monotony of being unwell.

A book is a thoughtful item to include in a care package, for mental engagement and relaxation. If the patient is laid up and unable to hold a physical book, you may want to consider an audio book. These are available free from UK Libraries who use the Borrow Box app.
7. Skincare Items
Illness can take a toll on the skin, making skincare items a thoughtful addition to your care package. Consider including a hydrating face mask, a gentle moisturiser, and a soothing lip balm. These items can help your loved one feel pampered and maintain their skincare routine even while they’re resting. Skincare items are excellent to include in a care package for some extra pampering.
8. Scrunchie
Hair care can often fall by the wayside when someone is feeling sick. A soft, stylish scrunchie is a practical and pretty addition to a care package. It can help keep hair out of their face without causing any discomfort.
Choose scrunchies made from gentle materials like satin or cotton to avoid any unnecessary tugging or pulling. A scrunchie is a useful and stylish item to include in a care package.
9. Dry Shampoo
For days when a full shower is too exhausting, dry shampoo is a lifesaver. It refreshes hair and absorbs excess oil, helping your loved one feel a bit more put-together. It is especially useful in a care package when the recipient is bed-bound.

There are various scents and formulas available, so pick one that suits their hair type and scent preferences. Dry shampoo is a convenient item to include in a care package for quick grooming.
10. Essential Oils
Essential oils are renowned for their therapeutic properties. Including a small selection of essential oils, such as lavender for relaxation, peppermint for headache relief, and eucalyptus for clear breathing, can provide a range of benefits.
Make sure to include a small guide on how to use them safely, such as adding a few drops to a diffuser or a bath. Essential oils are perfect to include in a care package for their soothing benefits.
How Should the Care Package be Presented?
The presentation and wrapping of the care package are crucial for making a significant impact. Consider using a sturdy and visually appealing box or basket as the base for the care package. You can line the container with a blanket, soft fabric or tissue paper for an added touch of luxury.
To make the package visually appealing, consider using colourful tissue paper or shredded paper to cushion the items. This can also add a delightful pop of colour to the care package. Adding a handwritten note expressing your well-wishes and support can personalise the care package even more.
Finally, carefully consider before wrapping the entire package with cellophane. This, combined with tying it with a beautiful ribbon or bow may give a polished and elegant presentation, but this attention to detail will send a lot of plastic to landfill. Personally, I’d opt for a pretty, reusable bag or storage box.
Crafting the Perfect Care Package
When putting together a care package, consider the personal preferences and needs of your loved one. Personalise it with items you know they love or have been wanting to try.

Including items like an eye mask, bath bombs, fluffy socks, a hot water bottle, chocolate, a book, skincare items, a scrunchie, dry shampoo, and essential oils ensures a well-rounded care package that caters to both comfort and care. Each item serves a purpose, whether it’s providing physical relief, mental relaxation, or a simple moment of joy.
Surgery recovery can be an arduous time, requiring ample rest and comfort. Tailoring a care package with items that provide soothing relief and relaxation can significantly aid in their healing process. Be mindful of where wounds are, and how they are likely to impact the recipient’s ability to use the items you’re including.

Remember, the most crucial element of a care package is the love and thoughtfulness behind it. Your gesture will show your loved one that you are thinking of them and wishing them a swift recovery.
This thoughtful blend of pampering, practicality, and indulgence will undoubtedly make them feel cherished and supported during their time of need. Including the right items in a care package can make all the difference in their recovery journey.
