I’m sure most women will agree that maintaining a feminine and stylish appearance during cold weather can be challenging. It requires thoughtful wardrobe choices, to help ensure you are able to look stylish while staying warm in winter. The trick is to use layers and textures to your advantage, without sacrificing comfort or personal style. I feel the key is finding the perfect balance between warmth and style, when the were turns chilly.

Keep reading to find out my top tips to help you look stylish while staying warm in winter.

Thermals Can be Fashionable

Thermal tights don’t have to be unflattering. I recently got myself a pair of faux transparent fleece lined tights and they are an actual game changer! It looks like I’m wearing 30 or 40 denier black tights, when in reality, they are lined with nude fleece. This allows me to both keep warm and also look great in winter. They can be dressed up with heels, or down with slouch boots, too.

I paired my transparent thermal tights with a cute dress to go to a Winter wedding and felt toasty warm all day – even when outside for photos! The best part about fleece lined pantyhose is that they are ladder resistant! So even when I caught my handbag zipper on them, they didn’t pull or ladder.

A thermal long sleeved tee is an excellent base layer if you don’t want to wear a big coat. I opted for a pinafore style dress with a long sleeved thermal tee underneath when I met a friend for a walk round the Christmas Markets and lunch recently, and didn’t want to wear a coat. This kept me warm enough in the crisp December weather, so is a great choice to help you look stylish while staying warm in winter.

Balance Outfits to Avoid Looking Bulky

It’s important to balance bulkier winter pieces with more fitted items, to maintain a flattering silhouette. I recommend pairing loose-fitting sweaters with slender jeans or leggings. By showing how slender your legs are, you avoid looking bigger than you are.

Alternatively, you can wear a tighter fitting top with a voluminous skirt, for a balanced look. Layering is best done with proportion so that one item complements the others. This way, the overall effect is a sleek silhouette that improves your look, rather than overpowering it. So it’s a great way to help you look stylish while staying warm in winter.

Choose Your Footwear Carefully

Choosing winter-friendly footwear that is also stylish can be challenging. While high quality Ugg-style boots will keep your feet warm and comfortable, they aren’t the most stylish option, and can be expensive. Meanwhile cheaper versions may offer no foot support or let in water, which creates bigger issues. With that in mind, it’s important to choose wisely when shopping for winter-friendly footwear.

1. Boot Styles and Heights

Winter boots need to be practical before stylish, in my opinion. There are many different styles out there, which can complement various looks, at both formal and informal events. While I feel knee-high boots are more practical and stylish, ankle boots are more versatile. Combat boots can add edge to feminine outfits and give stability on slick areas, but they are hard to dress up.

Over-the-knee boots create a striking statement and offer optimum protection from chilly weather. They can be dressed up or down, and are sure to draw compliments and opinions from plenty of people too. (They are my boot of choice when it’s cold, so I’d say they help me to look stylish while staying warm in winter).

2. Winter Heel Options

During winter, it’s important to always pick a pair of shoes with good grip on icy pavements. Wedge shoes give you height without compromising stability, so if you have to wear heels, they are the safest choice. That said, block heels are more stable than stilettos. Personally, I choose flat, over the knee boots for everyday use; as they are sophisticated and functional. I’m tall though, so appreciate that flat boots aren’t everyone’s first choice.

I feel that 2-3 inch block or wedge heels are the safest way to get more height without sacrificing comfort or stability is with platform soles.

3. Weather-Appropriate Materials

For the best protection from snow and rain, I recommend you consider boots made of water-resistant leather, P.U, or treated suede. It’s also best to wear rubber bottom shoes with a firm grip for safety on ice terrain. You should also think about wearing thermal lined boots or leaving some space for warm socks.
