Today I’m sharing how to quickly get rid of unpleasant smells in a room. Sometimes, unwanted smells show up at home without warning and quickly spoil the atmosphere. Whether it’s from last night’s dinner, a pet passing through, or simply a room that hasn’t been aired out, certain odours have a way of hanging around.
Smells can cling to carpets, curtains and sofas, and once they do, they tend to linger. Most of the time, you don’t need anything complicated to deal with it. Small changes around the house usually make more difference than you’d expect.
Open the Windows and Let the Air In
If a room smells a bit off, open a window first. Even a short burst of fresh air can help shift that stale feeling. It’s especially noticeable in rooms that feel damp or stuffy. If you can, open windows on opposite sides of the room so the air flows through. That cross-breeze works well for moving smells out and letting cleaner air in, to get rid of musty smells.

In homes where windows rarely get opened, smells can become trapped and build up over time. This is particularly true in colder months, when people tend to keep everything shut tight. Try to make it a habit to ventilate each room at least once a day, even if it’s just for a few minutes to help get rid of unpleasant smells.
Addressing Trapped Smells in Fabrics
Soft furnishings tend to hold onto smells. Once something gets into the fibres, it rarely goes away on its own. The good news is, you don’t need to scrub everything. A few natural ingredients can make a real difference without much effort.
Cushions, rugs and throws are often the biggest culprits. If they can be washed, pop them into the machine. For larger items like sofas, give them a good airing out near an open window or outside in the shade. Sunlight can also help kill lingering bacteria that may be causing unpleasant smells.
Natural Helpers That Work to Get Rid of Musty Smells
Baking soda is a great tool to help get rid of unpleasant smells in the home. It absorbs both moisture and odour. Sprinkle it over carpets or rugs before vacuuming, or leave small bowls of it in corners where smells tend to build up. Cupboards, bathrooms, or bins are good places to start.

Vinegar also works well. Though its own scent can be sharp at first, a bowl of vinegar left on the kitchen counter or near the fridge overnight helps neutralise food odours without masking them. You can also use a vinegar-and-water mix to wipe down surfaces like shelves, worktops and the inside of rubbish bins.
Using Essential Oils for a Fresher Feel
Essential oils are ideal for adding a natural scent to your home. You can also make a quick room spray. Fill a small glass bottle with around 100 ml of water and add a few drops of your chosen oils. Shake it well and spray it lightly in the air, on curtains, or even in wardrobes when things feel a bit stale.
When cleaning, try adding a few drops of oil to your mop water or onto your robot vacuum’s cloth (just avoid putting oils directly in the water tank). For laundry, add one or two drops to a wool dryer ball, or place a scented cloth in the tumble dryer for a more natural approach.
Even adding a few drops of essential oil to the cardboard inside your toilet roll can gently scent the bathroom each time it’s used. Simple tricks like that can quietly enhance the way your whole home feels.

A diffuser is an easy way to use them, and you can pick scents that suit your mood – like lavender to relax, citrus to energise, or eucalyptus to clear the air.

Don’t Ignore What the Air Is Telling You When Trying to get rid of Unpleasant Smells
The way your home smells often says something about the air quality. If musty smells keep coming back, it could point to poor ventilation, too much moisture, or even mould hiding in places you don’t see. Sorting that out not only clears the air but can make your home feel calmer and more balanced.
So, if something doesn’t smell right, take it as a sign. Open a window, to get rid of musty smells, freshen things up, and enjoy a home that feels more like yours again.
