If you have a spare room in your house that you rarely use, now is a great time to spruce it up and put it to use. You will wonder why you have not done it before. Our own spare room has been a cinema, office, play room and Xbox room in the past 10 years. Not to mention a bedroom! With that in mind, today I am sharing some easy spare room decor ideas
Easy Spare Room Decor Ideas
Firstly, I am going to discuss the flooring. This is because a lot of people forget about renewing this when they revamp a room. Why that is, I’m not sure. However, I do know that nothing pulls a room down faster than a ropy old carpet, and bashed up skirting boards. So, sorting out the flooring and skirting should be high on your to do list.
You can easily buy what you need to renew your skirting boards from online retailers like this one. Taking this approach is far easier than getting on your hands and knees and spending a day and a half rubbing down, filling and repainting your old ones.
Good quality laminate flooring or vinyl is far cheaper than carpet. It goes down fast and is far easier to keep clean. So, I recommend that you consider using those flooring materials rather than re-carpeting. Especially if you have dogs and kids like we do! Accidental spills and puddles are far easier to clean from vinyl and laminate than carpet!
Easy Spare Room Decor Ideas – The walls
If you currently have wallpaper on the walls of your spare room, it’s probably best to strip it all off and paint them instead. This will take a bit of time, but, moving forwards it will be far cheaper and easier to maintain or update your walls. You can always paint onto your wallpaper if you’d prefer. If you want some sort of pattern on your walls, you can use wall stickers or stencil them. Wall stickers are easy to apply, and can be peeled off and replaced whenever you next want to change the look of your spare room.
It is worth updating the lighting too. I’d recommend you choose new fixtures which can be put up in place of the old ones, without the need to call in an electrician. I wouldn’t recommend spotlights – the bulbs are a total nightmare to change!
Additionally, you may want to invest in new window coverings. A lot of people avoid buying new curtains and blinds, because it can be expensive to do so.
Fortunately, making your own is not as difficult or as expensive as you might think. It really is worth going on YouTube, finding a how-to video that you can easily follow and having a go. Once you have learned how to do it, you will end up saving yourself a lot of money.
Alternatively, there are plenty of retailers who let you measure your own blinds and order directly to save a fortune on local fitters fees. This is brilliant if you don’t need to replace your rails, and just want new fabric. This is one of my best value easy spare room decor ideas.
Change up your storage
Finally, when revamping a room, don’t forget to open the cupboard or wardrobe and give that a makeover too. Take everything out, throw away what you do not need and re-organise the interior. If the shelves are a long way apart, consider putting in some extra ones.
This will enable you to maximise the amount of the cube you use, so that you can fit more the same space. You can find out how to install shelves in a cupboard from YouTube.
