Improve Your Home Security
Whether you want to improve your home security a little, or go full Fort Knox, this post will help! So keep reading for 4 great ways to improve your home security.
1.New Electric Gates
Installing electric gates is a great way of keeping you and all household occupants safer and keeping your home more secure from a potential break-in.
An electric gate can act as a barrier to entry that will naturally deter burglars. The cost of installing electric gates can range from several hundred pounds to around £4,200.
For example, an articulated ARM single wooden electric gate costs about £720 to £2,040 depending on the size. On the other hand, sliding electric gates tend to cost between £3,225 to £3,600.

2. Security Lighting
Similarly, we recommend having security lighting added to your property. This too can help deter burglars. And, as with security cameras, it’s worth adding security lighting to the front and back of your property.
Ideally, you should opt for motion detecting security lights as these will turn on when someone nears your property. If you are awake, this can draw your attention to your front or back garden. Either way, it will likely deter burglars from attempting a break-in once the light shines upon them.
3. Security Cameras
Another great measure to improve home security is to add a range of security cameras (i.e., CCTV). Along with being able to record events outside your property (and thus offering a chance to capture any intruders on camera should there be a break-in), security cameras can deter burglars from attempting a break-in in the first place.
It’s worth having a security camera or two at the front of your property and one or two at the back. This way, you can deter burglars from attempting to break and enter at the front of your property and the back (e.g., if the burglars were hopping walls looking for a house to break into from a back window or door). You may also want to consider one or two indoor security cameras.
There are a whole host of security cameras on the market. In terms of categorization, you may want to choose between wired and wireless CCTV. Some can also be connected to the internet. It’s worth carefully weighing up your options before deciding on what type of security cameras to go with. Beyond that, motion detecting security cameras are also available on the market. Also, a video doorbell might be worth looking into.

4. Door Security
Unless your door security is already at a high level, it’s worth looking at improving its locks. You can do this by hire a professional locksmith to determine if your external doors are aligned with British security standards, a.k.a., PAS 24:2016.
If it is not up to standard, have your locks replaced with higher quality upgrades. If you’re considering having a new door installed entirely, you may want to look into doors made of composite material. Along with offering a high level of security, composite doors are weather-resistant and durable.
Other Security Features
Aside from the features already mentioned, briefly, here are some other ideas worth looking into to improve your home security:
- Increased window security (e.g., better locks or laminated glass)
- High-quality security alarm system
- Ensure your garage doors are made from a solid material (e.g., a metal)
- Adding gravel around your home can make it harder for burglars to sneak toward your property
- Shed door padlocks and perhaps adding a small battery-powered alarm to increase security more
Hiring a Professional
Whatever type of professional you need for your home security upgrade (e.g., locksmith for new door locks or gate installation company for electric gates), it’s best to obtain three or more quotes before making a decision.
This way, you can weigh up your options to determine who offers the most value for money. Consider their previous experience, any online ratings/reviews they have, and, of course, the quote they offer.
