5 Easy Ways to Earn Money Blogging

Sharing is Caring!

Today I’m sharing some easy ways to earn money blogging. I want to start this post by explaining that I have been blogging at MotherGeek for almost 15 years, and I first began to earn money from blogging in 2018. So now that we have covered my credentials, let’s dig in to some of the ways I earn money from blog posts, and blogging in general.

*This post contains affiliate links but no paid placement.

Before you Earn Money Blogging, you Need to Know the Local Rules

In the UK, you have to register as self employed and declare all of your income from blogging. Whether you earn £50 a year, or £50,000 a year, you must declare all income – even if you have another taxable job. You only need to file a tax return if you earn over £1000 within the tax year, though. If you’re living in another country, you’ll need to look up their rules.

Different Ways to Earn Money from Blogging

There are many ways to make money from blogging. Some of them are available instantly, while others will require having an established blog before you can use them.

Earn Money Blogging with Affiliate Links

Affiliate links are available to almost all blogs, no matter how old the blog is. I personally use Amazon Associates to generate revenue from blog posts, by linking to Amazon products. The money is paid out monthly, and can be cashed out as either an amazon voucher or bank transfer when you’ve earned over £25. Commission rates range from 1% (groceries) to 8% (fashion).

To qualify for Amazon associates, you need to either have a well established blog, OR 500+ followers on a public social media account. The latter is definitely doable for most people, without much effort. You can also earn commission called “bounties,” when people take out free trials using your links. I earn £3 for each person who signs up for a Prime video channel free 7 day trial. Or even £3 for each person who signs up for a 30 day Amazon Prime free trial.

Bookworms can earn too! Every time someone take out a Kindle Unlimited free trial using your link, you’ll earn £3. Amazon associates will also earn £5 for each person taking out an Audible free trial, and £8 every time someone uses your link to sign up to a full price or discounted Audible membership.

Your earnings are paid out 2 months after they are earned – So December’s income is added to your account in February, for example. (This is to allow for product returns within the 30 day return window). I find it’s a super convenient way to generate revenue from my blog, and it’s a great passive income for evergreen blog content.

Earn Money From Blogging With In-Page Ads

One way many bloggers choose to earn money is by placing ads on their blog. These can be in side-bars, footers, or in-page ads. I personally find ads on some blogs can be invasive, and negatively impact the user experience. They can also slow down the page speed of your blog, so make sure you check the suitability before you commit to hosting ads. It’s also worth considering that you could potentially be advertising things you don’t necessarily agree with, if you’ve given an agency permission to post what they like via a widget you embed on your blog.

Can you think of any other ways to earn money blogging?

Most UK bloggers start off using google ads as a way to earn money blogging. A blogging friend with around 8k views a month told me she earns £40-£60 per month via them. This isn’t to be sniffed at, but if you have sufficient traffic, you may want to look at media vine, who pay much better than google do for ad placement. You’ll need plenty of traffic to meet their criteria though (Over 50k uniques per month).

Their sister company Journey by Mediavine is open to those with over 1000 unique visitors per month to their blog. The amount you earn depends on the type of content you have and where your audience is from. Rates are set based on a price per 1000 views. (RPM – rate per mille/thousand views). When you register, it can take up to 5 months to be approved. During this time, Journey by Mediavine are collating your traffic information to set your rate of pay. This rate is updated regularly, as your traffic evolves.

Get Paid to Review

Another fun way to earn money blogging is to take part in paid reviews. I joined Get Blogged years ago, and have been paid to review lots of items vis there. From jewellery to toiletries, electrical items and dog accessories, there’s loads of ways to earn. Some opportunities are for blogs of a minimum Domain Authority, while others are open to all. You submit an application for each potential job you want to be involved with, then the company will reach out if you’re chosen. Once the work is completed, you submit the URL and the funds are usually released within 3 days.

One thing I will add here is that keyword use is essential in making reviews rank well on google. I personally use Keysearch to find the best  keywords for my review posts, and this has worked well for me. This Brick Borrow review literally outranks the business’ own website and trustpilot on searches for “brickborrow review”, thanks to key search. I’ve added a screenshot below, to show this.

Create Content for Companies

Another great way to earn money from blogging is to create blog posts for companies. I have registered for several platforms which allow you to do this. Whitepress lets you set your own rates, and they reach out when any companies want to collaborate with you. The funds usually take around a week to be paid out from when you submit the link to the completed job. I’ve earned over £500 in the past 4 months, via this platform.

Another company I have worked with a lot on this kind of basis is Bazoom. I have earned over £2000 on this platform, and find them great to work with bloggers. The payouts do take a couple of weeks to come through though, but it’a a good way to earn money blogging once your DA is over 10. I love that you can activate promotions on this platform, to offer discounts when your to-do list is empty. This helps to bring in more work during quieter periods. It’s important to remember that here in the UK, this kind of content must be marked as an ad / sponsored.

Branch out to Social Media

In my early blogging days, I used to review a lot of the kids’ toys. As part of this process, I’d make YouTube videos to show how they worked. These videos have proven to be a very lucrative passive income. My kids are both teenagers now, but those videos from 2013-2020 still bring in over £1000 a year, with no effort. (I upload a few YouTube stories a year, to keep my account active). I created two YouTube videos of a vac and mop I was sent to review last year, and those two videos alone have brought in £95.

I’m not into TikTok, so I don’t earn from there, but I know plenty of bloggers who are now using TikTok Shop to earn money while they grow their channels. I have to be honest – I’m more of a lurker these days. I don’t have the energy (or confidence) to create face-on videos, so I don’t put as much into this as I could. I find that hosting blog giveaways, and requesting entrants follow you on socials is a great way to grow your reach organically, if you do want to try this, though.
