Back in 2009, I made a nappy cake for my cousin who was expecting her first baby.
Since then, quite a few people have asked me how I did it, so I decided to post a blog with step by step instructions. So read on to find out how to make a nappy cake. In the interest of full disclosure, the cake in the first image is a stock photo. You can see a photo of the Nappy Cake I created near the bottom of this post.

How To Make A Nappy Cake

So, without further ado… Here goes!

YOU WILL NEED:

• 60 size 2 nappies.
• 2 baby bottles (long shaped, 8oz ones – not the short, wide ones).
• 80 ish Elastic Bands- Including 6 Very Large ones.
• Around 2.5 Metres of Ribbon- 5-8cm Thick
• 3 Nappy Pins to secure the ribbon.
• A tray or strong cardboard base to stand the cake on
• Any gifts or trinkets you want to add. (optional).

Here is a step by step guide to how to make the nappy cake:

1). Roll each nappy up, from the top edges- (With the stickers on) to the bottom fold.
Keep the roll tight and the sides of the nappy folded in as you roll.

2). Secure each nappy with an elastic band.

3). Take one of the baby bottles.

4). Place this bottle in the centre of your tray.

5). arrange a circle of nappies around the bottle, stood up.
(Ensure no bottle is visible through the nappies).
This step took me 6 nappies.

6). Secure these nappies with an elastic band around them.

7). Arrange a second circle of nappies around the first circle. (This took around 12 nappies)
Secure this circle with another elastic band.

You should then have 2 circles of nappies around the bottom of the baby bottle.
Six on the inner ring and around Twelve on the outer ring.

8). Create a 3rd ring of nappies around the 2nd ring. (This took around 18 nappies)
Secure this circle with another elastic band.

You should then have 3 circles of nappies around the bottom of the baby bottle.

9). The bottom tier of the cake is now complete.

10). On top of the bottom tier. arrange another circle of 6 nappies

11). Secure the nappy ring with an elastic band.

12). Place the second baby bottle into the centre of this newest circle of nappies.
(It should go down around half way before hitting the top of the first bottle).

13). Arrange a second circle of nappies around the first circle.
(This took around 12 nappies)

14). Secure this circle with another elastic band.
You should then have 2 circles of nappies on the second tier of the cake.
6 on the inner ring and around 12 on the outer ring.

15). The second tier is now complete.

16). On top of the second tier. arrange a final circle of 6 nappies.

17). Secure the nappy ring with an elastic band.

18). The basic nappy cake is now made.

19) Finally, Cut the ribbon into 3 pieces- ensuring each piece wraps comfortably round one tier of nappies.

20). Secure one length of ribbon around each of the outer layers of
nappies (so it hides the elastic bands), and secure with a nappy pin.

If you want to add gifts to it, do this before you do steps 19-20.

This is a photo of the nappy cake I made.

It was made with size 2 Huggies nappies, but any brand of size 2 disposable nappies will do.

The gifts I added were Johnsons baby bath, baby shampoo, baby oil, talc, booties, a teddy & a comfort blanket.

I also put baby cotton buds into the bottles and added a miniature bottle of Blossom Hill for mummy’s consumption – post delivery of course!!

The entire thing is stood on a round metal tray, for easy transportation.

My cousin absolutely loved it, and it stood on her Dining table for weeks, until her baby was finally big enough for size 2 nappies!

You could wrap it in cellophane to make it look more professional, but I’m not one for excessive packaging, or creating unnecessary land – fill.
