As the days get shorter and the weather grows chilly, you’re probably looking forward to lots of cosy evenings inside. However, the harsh winter conditions, combined with exposure to heating and dry, inside air can play havoc with your hair. This time of year, many people struggle with dull, lifeless or frizzy locks. So with that in mind, today I’m sharing some tips to keep your hair luscious during Winter. Read on for my ideas.
How To Keep Your Hair Luscious During Winter
By taking a few simple steps that take into account this particular season, you can maintain your hair and hold on to your shiny, soft and luscious locks. Below, I’m sharing some simple and affordable tips to get your hair in peak condition during the chilly months ahead.
Don’t shampoo your hair too often
Shampooing in excess can ruin your hair at any time, but particularly during winter. Shampoo strips your hair and scalp of its sebum and other natural oils, causing them to dry out. Not to mention that the chemicals present in shampoo can lead to an itchy scalp and other problems.
Therefore, you should not wash your hair more than is necessary – for most people, every three to four days will suffice. If you have dry hair, you may not need to wash it more than once a week, and look for shampoos with natural, non-toxic ingredients.
Make deep conditioning a regular habit
Winter conditions can dry out your hair and lead to breakage of hair follicles. During this season it is more important than ever to nourish and moisturise your hair with deep conditioners from brands like Curlsmith. Make sure to condition your hair thoroughly with each wash, as well as using leave-in conditioners from time to time.
Cover your head with a scarf or a hat
You can take care of your hair and be fashionable at the same time! When the weather gets colder, cover your hair with a gentle silk scarf. Once you have a soft scarf in place, feel free to cover it with a hat or a hoodie. This will help to protect your hair from the chilly weather. However, it is important to avoid placing cotton or woollen fabric directly over your hair is these materials can dry your hair and lead to split-ends.
Avoid too many heat styling products
Excessive usage of styling products can do more harm to your hair than you can imagine, causing split ends and breakages. If you simply must use heat styling products, make sure you use them with a good-quality heat protectant serum. An even better idea is to avoid these kinds of products entirely to avoid bad hair days like these. Why not pick a different style this winter that such as a messy bun or a fish-braid, that look fabulous while giving your hair a break?
Use serums and oils
There is no doubt that the harsh weather in winter causes dry, dull and frizzy hair. To keep your hair well-hydrated, you need to take proper care of it. You can choose to moisturise your hair overnight or apply a serum to lock in the moisture content of your hair. Make it part of your weekly routine to apply serum or oil to your hair.
Ingredients such as green tea, aloe vera, cocoa butter, and shea butter work wonders for your hair in the colder months! You can switch to pillow covers made of soft fabric such as satin or silk. Thus avoiding cotton, which can dry your hair.
Avoid overly hot showers
Who does not enjoy a calming, de-stressing warm shower? It can be tempting to spend as long as possible under hot water when the weather is chilly. However, hot water is not good for your hair, as it strips the natural oils from your hair, drying it out and putting it at risk of breakage. When washing your hair, keep your showers lukewarm rather than hot to protect your locks!
Don’t leave the house with wet hair
When you step out of the house with wet hair in the winter season, you expose your hair to even more dryness. Additionally, in winters wet hair can even freeze in the cold winds, causing breakage and loss of shine. To avoid this, be sure to completely dry your hair before leaving the house. Remember that it is always better to let your hair dry naturally rather than exposing it to potentially-drying blow dryers and straighteners. So allow plenty of time for your hair to dry before going out.
Hydrate from the inside out
Drinking plenty of water becomes even more crucial in the winter season. If you are dehydrated, this dryness can lead to loss of hydration in your the hair follicles as well as your skin. If you want your hair to be shiny and smooth… You need to make sure that you are eating a healthy diet and drinking plenty of water.
Enjoy this winter and let your hair flourish this season too. Tweak your hair care routine a little for the colder weather, and keep your hair luscious during Winter! Finally, there’s something about having super shiny hair which makes me smile. Do you agree?
