1 Honest Simba Hybrid Mattress Review

Sharing is Caring!

Today I’m sharing my honest Simba hybrid mattress review. If you read my blog often, you’ll know my 14 year old son, Sam is Classically Autistic and Epileptic. He goes through more mattresses than most people, so when Simba offered us one to review, I excitedly asked for a single one for his bed. Sam struggles to sleep, so I figured something as comfy (and spendy) as this, should surely help.

Here’s what Simba say about their Hybrid Mattress:

Simba Hybrid Mattress Review – First Impressions

When the mattress arrived, I was shocked by the size of the box. It was 3 feet tall and about 1 foot squared. Upon opening the box, I found an extremely tightly wrapped mattress. Honestly, I was a bit concerned at this point that it would be deep enough to provide sufficient comfort. Spoiler: Those concerns were unnecessary!

I unpacked the mattress in the spare bedroom, so it could air out and expand, without disturbing Sam. (It’s on top of the double bed in the above photos, which is why it looks too small – it’s not for this bed)!

The leaflet that’s enclosed with Simba mattresses says the mattress can be slept on after a few hours, but I decided to leave it for the full 48 hours to air out, as Sam’s asthmatic so the smell could potentially have been a trigger. Speaking of the smell, it is nowhere near as bad as other foam mattresses I’ve bought in the past. It’s definitely still there when you open the box, but the smell was completely gone after 48 hours airing in the bedroom, with the window open slightly.

Waiting 48 Hours

The below photos show how the Simba hybrid mattress looked immediately upon unboxing, after 6 hours, and after the full 48 hours.

The mattress had fully expanded after 48 hours, and it was the full 25cm deep. It was at this point I realised my error – The handles are intended for spinning the mattress only – not moving it around the home. Cue a “Pivot” moment that Ross Geller would be proud of, as we carried it from one room to the other. Once the mattress was in situ in Sam’s room, I finally gave it a go, and WOW!

First Impressions of the Simba Hybrid Mattress

It’s worth noting that I struggle with chronic back pain, thanks to two herniated discs, so it’s rare that I find a mattress which both supports my back, but also cushions it. (A hard mattress causes immeasurable pain, as the herniated discs are in the small of my back – where the “void” is, when I lie down on a hard surface). My own mattress cost treble what the King Size Simba Hybrid Mattress retails at, and I’d say it’s on par with the support it gives.

Sam’s bed was custom built a few years ago. It’s a mid-sleeper with a solid wooden base, that’s built up on the “box” in his bedroom. There’s a small gap to the side of his mattress for his drink / toys to live, and the guard rail and ladder are just out of shot.

As soon as Sam climbed into his bed, he visibly relaxed. Sam’s non verbal so he can’t tell me what he thinks exactly, but he slept right through last night, so I’m taking that as a HUGE win!

Things to Consider Before Buying a Simba Hybrid Mattress for a SEN Child

The following points are mostly based on my own findings, but I wanted to outline them to help others make an informed decision before spending such a large amount on a mattress. The first thing I need to mention is the washable cover! I’ve not actually removed and washed it yet, but what a game changer! No more stains! I will still put a waterproof mattress protector over the top as the removable cover isn’t waterproof.

The fact the cover can be zipped off means the innards are also easier to access than a traditional mattress though. So if your child has a tendency to eat foam, you need to make sure you’re mindful of this.

This Medium-Firm mattress is the perfect balance of support and comfort. The foam layer has cooling technology too, so it won’t cause the user to overheat like traditional memory foam can.

The Verdict

We’ve not had the Simba Hybrid Mattress for long, so this verdict is only based on a few nights’ sleep as of yet. However, so far it’s two huge thumbs up from us! I’ll update this post in a few months’ time to give a full answer here, but for now… The Simba Hybrid Single Mattress gets a big yes from us!

PS: We were gifted the mattress for the purpose of this review, but all words and opinions are my own.
