Today I’m sharing 5 ideas to make dog walks more fun. If you read my blog regularly, you’ll know I have two dogs. One White Boxer – Monty, and one Brown Boxer Mix – Minnie! They are both five now, so I’ve been doing 2+ dog walks every day for over 5 years. I think that makes me experienced enough to share some ideas to make dog walks more fun.
3 Ideas to Make Dog Walks More Fun
One thing I won’t do to make dog walks more fun is put my earphones in. Personally, I feel it’s super important to be aware of your surroundings, and people approaching at all times.
For me, this means being able to hear what’s going on. Not only for the risk of dog theft or someone mugging me, but to be able to hear approaching vehicles, bikes and kids on scooters. Keep reading for some inspiration to make dog walks more fun.
1). Talk to Fellow Dog Walkers
I’m not someone who finds it easy to randomly strike up a conversation with a stranger. However, once the ice is broken, I can talk all day. A great thing to do this is a slogan t-shirt. One of my best dog-walking friends first talked to me to laugh at my top. It read, “No outfit is complete without dog hair”. We’ve been chatting for a couple of years now, when we cross paths on our walks.

2). Take Treats or a Toy
My dogs couldn’t be more different. Minnie’s recall is perfect & she is fine off-lead. She lives for a game of fetch, and rolling in puddles. I often take a ball on our walks, so she can play fetch and burn off some extra energy, while we take walks off the beaten – track. She loves going to the woods, fields and beach.
Monty can’t be let off the lead, because his recall isn’t great. He’s also nervous of other dogs, after being pinned as a pup. This means he’s happiest on-lead, walking the streets, where you don’t find dogs off-lead, so he’s calmer.
I take treats with us, so we can work on his obedience as we walk. He loves to sit and wait at the edge of the pavement, because he knows he gets a treat, once we’ve crossed the road. I’ve been known to dress him up for walkies on occasion, too! Just to spread a little cheer!
3). Take Your Phone
I love to share Monty and Minnie’s shenanigans online. There’s a fab dog community on Instagram, and it’s somewhere we love to share our adventures. It’s been a bit quiet over there recently as I’ve had a bad back since June, so our adventures have been much closer to home lately.
