How to block calls and texts on iOS7

When I spotted the “block this caller” option on iOS7, I was very excited! It was just what I needed to stop the gym sales team annoying me on a weekly basis!

I decided to do a quick “how to” guide, to show my readers how you can block phone calls, FaceTime and text messages from specific numbers on iOS7 iPhones. There are several ways to do it…

The easiest way is to go into “Settings” then select “Phone” then select “Blocked”. If you then tap on “add new” it’ll bring up your contacts, and you select the one you want to block from calling and messaging you.

You can also add a number by tapping the ‘i’ next to a number stored in your recent call history. (This is useful if it’s not a contact you want to block). To do this, you tap “phone” then tap on “recents” then tap on the ‘i’ next to the number you want to block. Then you scroll down and tap on “Block this caller” towards the bottom of the options. (Here’s a couple of screen shots to show you).

A warning then pops up, saying “You will not receive phone calls,
messages or FaceTime from people on the block list.” You can then tap
“Block contact” to add them to your block list, or “Cancel” if you’ve
changed your mind.

Once you’ve added a number to your block list, if the number calls you, they’ll get straight through to your voicemail. If they leave any messages for you, the message won’t come through at your end. (I assume their network provider will still charge them for the call, though). If they send you a text message, this will not get through either – UNLESS you are both using iMessage. I tested this by blocking DaddyGeek’s number and his messages still came through until I turned off iMessage in my settings.

If you wish to remove them from your blocked list, you can do this easily.

Tap on “Settings” then “phone” then “Blocked”. A list of all the
numbers you have blocked will show here. To remove a number from the block
list, tap “Edit” (top-right of the screen), then tap the small red
circle which appears to the left of the contact you want to remove from
your block list. Then tap the word “Unblock” which appears.

Removing
someone from your block list will allow future calls to come through,
you can’t check if the caller has tried to contact you.

If you only want to block text messages coming from a number, you can do this too: Tap on “settings” then “messages” then scroll down and select “blocked”. You will not receive text messages from any numbers shown in here.

If you want to remove someone from your messaging block list, you can do this too. Tap on “Settings” then “messages” then “Blocked”. A list of all the
numbers you have blocked will show here. To delete a number from the
list, tap “Edit” (top-right of the screen), then tap the small red
circle which appears to the left of the contact you want to remove from
your block list. Then tap the word “Unblock” which appears.

Removing someone from your block list will allow future messages to come through, you can’t retrieve any messages sent while they were on your block list.

I have only tested this method on my iPhone 4s, running on iOS7. I assume any handset running iOS7 will be the same, though.
