My son, Sam is 7. He has Autism, and one of the only things he shows interest in is his iPad. Sam’s meltdowns lead to said iPad being thrown and dropped repeatedly. We’ve had cracked screens and broken buttons more times than I can count – despite buying cases and screen protectors. After Sam broke his iPad for the 5th time this year, I decided it was time I learn to replace an iPad screen myself…

How to replace an iPad screen

After shopping around, I bought a replacement screen and button kit from Amazon. I paid £15 for it and it arrived the next day. £15 was a fair bit cheaper than the £50 a time the local shop charged me to replace an iPad screen. I found this video on youtube, which I followed to get the job done.

Firstly…

Firstly, I had to use the enclosed tools to remove the broken screen. I used a hairdryer to heat the glue and make this a bit easier. Tiny shards of glass did flick off, so make sure you wear glasses or protective goggles. When I got to the point shown below, I knew there was no going back!

Secondly…

After the broken screen was removed and all the old glue cleaned off the case, I had to disconnect and remove the LCD screen. (You can’t touch this with bare hands, so my good old Marigolds saved the day). Once the LCD was out, I got to see the inner workings of the iPad…

Thirdly…

Everything up until this point was pretty stressful and time consuming. From here on in, it became much easier. I had to reconnect the LCD screen and reinsert it, then attach the new screen to the iPad before lining up the buttons and fixing it into place. I am pleased to announce that the 90 minute adventure resulted in a fully functioning iPad – YAY!

Finally…

To say I was proud of myself for learning how to replace an iPad screen, would be an understatement. I was 100% chuffed!

So that’s my massive achievement of the week – what have you accomplished? If you’ve enjoyed this post, why not check out more of my geeky content!
